Sometimes you walk into a Dublin pub and step back in time. You have in fact entered an old-fashioned, homely hostelry at a remote country crossroads.

Cromwell's Quarters, Murdering Lane, or The 39 (or is it 40?) Steps


For most of its life, right through the Victorian age, it was known as "Murdering Lane" or "Murdering-Lane" with a hyphen. Or "The Murd'ring Lane". Like the title of a bloodthirsty crime novel.

IMMA #1: Murder in the museum

I always thought the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) would be a bloody great place for a murder.

It's a striking location near the Liffey in Dublin, and is set in the 17th-century Royal Hospital Kilmainham (RHK). The Royal Hospital was a home for retired soldiers for almost 250 years, and I'm told it was modelled on Les Invalides in Paris.
